I am at Balestier after movie and wanted to have my dinner. When you thing of Balestier what food comes to your mind?

Tau Sar Piah?

No, no, no. Not them. I know there are lots of good Tau Sar Piah around in Balestier but not for dinner that day though I like them also.

Today’s dinner at Balestier is Bat Kuk Teh


We visited the famous Bak Kut Teh. They are famous for alot of reasons:

1) The restaurant is famous cause a lot of famous people visit them too. The 4 walls are all filled with photos taken with the famous people. Even them eat at this small restaurant, make you wonder how good they are


Only one side of the wall and so many photos already.

2) Another reason is of course that the food are good.


There are basically two types of Bak Kut Teh, the herbal type that is more famous in Malaysia and the pepper type that is seen more frequently in Singapore. What Founder Bak Kut Teh has is really peppery and I know of people who are in love with their full of pepper taste.

Pork Organ Soup. A bowl full of pork organs. This bowl of pork organ is so worth the money. $6 it cost and you simple see no ends to it. Very fresh and soft meat, liver, kidney, intestines and stomach

Salted Vegetable. This is the dish that surprised me. Looks oily but not oily at all and it is not like the normal salted vege I had. I really like this. J did not has much reaction when I say this is good until his first mouth of it. Nodding in agreement.


You Tiao (Deep fried dough). This came despite that we didn’t order it. We thought it was complimentary. But we are too simple minded…it cost $1.50. You Tiao seem like a must have on a Bak Kut Teh table to many but both of us wasn’t liking it. For those who don’t have an idea, You Tiao is actually eaten with Bak Kut Teh where you dip it in to the soup until the You Tiao is filled with the flavourful soup and you eat it. Soup will come rushing out in your mouth together with the taste of You Tiao. Suppose to be good if you see how I have describe it. But the You Tiao here has lost its texture. Wasn’t very nice even after dipping into the soup. We did not finish it. I still like it just drinking the soup itself

3) Third reason why Founder Bak Kut Teh is famous is that the soup are refillable. How great this is, right? When your soup runs to the bottom of the bowl, lift your hand and ask to refill from the staff. They will gladly do it for you. What’s even best is that the staff actually goes round filling people’s bowl even without request. I like the way that is. Once refilled, the hot soup warms your stomach once again like a new dish. Thumbs up for them lah!

4) The fourth reason – Personally, I think Founder Bak Kut Teh stands out better than the other one down the street which I had few months ago. You know where it stand after some comparison. That’s how I feel.
